The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics at TU Dortmund University and the Center for Logistics and Traffic at the University of Duisburg-Essen form the scientific nexus of the EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr. The aim of the EffizienzCluster is to meet the unique and specific logistical needs of individual clients while using only 75 percent of the resources used today (in ecological and economic terms). Altogether, 11 research institutes and educational institutions and more than 120 companies are represented in the EffizienzCluster.

Logistics is one of the main providers of jobs in the Ruhr Area – in 2010, about 90,000 people worked in the roughly 5,800 logistics companies in the region. students can take advantage of this strength.

Close collaborations between universities, research institutes, and companies impact individual research projects of students enrolled in the Urban Systems (master’s) and advanced research in Urban Systems (doctoral) programs offered at the University of Duisburg-Essen. In addition, TU Dortmund University houses Germany’s first Department for Urban Planning, which is renowned internationally and offers a degree program in logistics.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is associated with the Horst Goertz Institute for IT Security (HGI). With a total of nine professorships in electrical engineering, information sciences, mathematics, e-business, and law, as well as 50 scientists and researchers, the HGI is the largest university institution in its discipline in Europe and covers virtually all fields of modern cryptography and IT security.
