Life Science & Biotechnology

The Healthcare Campus North Rhine-Westphalia is being established in Bochum and will consolidate health-focused expertise, promote collaborative projects, and develop synergies and strategies to promote health in all areas of life. The Competence Center for Telematics in Healthcare, the Protein Research Unit within Europe (PURE), which works closely with the university hospital in Essen, and the management and consulting service MedEcon Ruhr are already part of the Healthcare Campus.

The Research Department of Neuroscience at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum takes an interdisciplinary approach to understand how the brain works. It integrates expertise in medicine, psychology, biology, biochemistry and computer science to investigate basic brain functions (e.g., vision, hearing, learning, memory and perception) by studying brain pathologies and their treatments (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's disease; multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia). The International Graduate School of Neuroscience (IGSN) represents the training branch of the Research Department of Neuroscience.

The Centre for Medical Biotechnology (ZMB) at the University of Duisburg-Essen is an interdisciplinary scientific center that combines medical research at the University Hospital and natural sciences at the Campus. In addition to biomedical research, the 55 working groups at ZMB develop new drugs and diagnostic tools.
